Organic food is worth the extra cost

Organic products command a premium on the promise of health and sustainability. Is it justified? The arguments on both sides.

Arguments for

  • Organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides, so produce carries fewer chemical residues.
  • Its standards favour soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare over pure yield.
  • Many buyers value avoiding routine antibiotics and growth hormones in animal products.
  • Supporting organic can push the wider food system toward less intensive, more sustainable methods.

Arguments against

  • Evidence that organic food is meaningfully more nutritious or safer for health is weak.
  • Organic still uses approved pesticides, and "natural" does not automatically mean safer.
  • Lower yields can mean more land per unit of food, so the environmental edge is not clear-cut.
  • The price premium is hard to justify on tight budgets when conventional produce is perfectly healthy.
